City of Indianapolis Approves First Defense® High Capacity

The City of Indianapolis has approved the First Defense® High Capacity stormwater separator with the highest stormwater treatment loading rate in the industry.

The High Capacity variant of the First Defense® advanced hydrodynamic stormwater separator has been approved for 80% Total Suspended Solids (TSS) removal by the City of Indianapolis – at the highest treatment loading rate in the industry. This advancement offers engineers and contractors the potential to save up to 40% or more space on their site, helping to significantly reduce time and overall project costs.

First Defense® doesn't just save space, it's also a highly adaptable treatment system that works easily with large pipes, multiple inlet pipes, inlet grates and now contains a high capacity internal bypass for the conveyance of large peak flows. Designed with site flexibility in mind, First Defense® allows engineers to maximize available site space without compromising treatment level.

We've been designing advanced separation devices for decades but we've finally uncovered the secret to getting the highest loading rate through the smallest footprint," said John Larson, Senior Project Engineer at Hydro International. "This system will be an important treatment option for any engineer needing to get the most out of a small and/or difficult site space.

Systems are available in the following sizes and approved flow rates:

  • 3-ft – approved for up to 0.73/cfs
  • 4-ft - approved for up to 1.50/cfs
  • 5-ft - approved for up to 2.62/cfs
  • 6-ft - approved for up to 4.13/cfs
  • 8-ft - approved for up to 8.49/cfs

Engineers in Indiana, Louisville, KY, parts of Michigan or any municipality following Indianapolis regulations will now be permitted to specify a treatment system that is quickly gaining favor among engineers across North America.

The High Capacity variant is an enhanced version of the original First Defense® which is currently installed in thousands of locations throughout the US, Canada and worldwide.
