Fruit & Vegetable Processing Wastewater Treatment

Fruit and vegetable processing product and equipment wash water and CIP all generate wastewater that is expensive to treat or discharge. Raw water costs continue to rise, and sewer discharge fees typically increase each year. Fortunately, Hydro International’s liquid-solids separation solutions can help processors to improve efficiency and cut costs.

A common denominator for most fruit and vegetable processing operations is the need for tremendous amounts of water to wash product and maintain sanitary conditions required for food processing. Processing operations such as food peeling, stemming, pitting, snipping, blanching, coring, and cutting all require a lot of water.

Transporting product via water flumes after these applications further contributes to the wastewater stream, and residual product can enter wastewater at nearly every step of fruit and vegetable processing operations.

Supplied water, onsite treatment, waste disposal, and sewer costs rapidly impact any food processor’s bottom line. Hydro International’s industry-leading liquid / solids separation technologies can increase water re-use options, increase on-site treatment efficiency, reduce handling and disposal costs, and lower sewer fees for all types of fruit and vegetable processors.

Rotating Belt Filtration for Solids Removal and Material Recovery

Sewer surcharges can be the bane of fruit and vegetable processing operations. Surcharges arise from both solids and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) in effluent water. The Hydro MicroScreen™ ultrafine rotating belt screen can significantly reduce your surcharges or potentially eliminate them.

Washdown of plant equipment and clean-in-place (CIP) can dislodge processed product that is washed away with your cleaning water. Often these solids can be quite large, and Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is not very efficient at treating larger solids. Prior to entering DAF a separate conventional screening and screenings dewatering system is typically used.

A Hydro MicroScreen™ eliminates the need for both the conventional screening system and the dewatering system while significantly reducing the load sent to expensive and energy intensive DAF systems. A Hydro MicroScreen™ increases DAF processing efficiency by removing these large solids and letting DAF do what it does best: remove very fine particles, oils, and grease.

Only Hydro MicroScreen™:

  • Captures 66% more material than a conventional wedgewire screen
  • Reduces surcharges

Small Footprint Solution for Sand & Grit Removal from Washwater

Recycle Water and Protect Downstream Equipment

By nature, ground crops have sand and dirt associated with them. Raw materials received from farming operations are never quite clean enough to prevent abrasive damage to rollers, conveyors, pumps, knives and other processing equipment. Sand and dirt causes equipment to prematurely fail and can force your line to shut down when you are operating at peak capacity.

Flume receiving stations require a tremendous amount of water, and plants with conventional technologies are often left with no option other than to send flume water to large settling basins that require dredging, excavating, and hauling to regain volume for settling. Hydro International has provided sand removal solutions for over 45 years.

Our industry-leading liquid / solids separation systems remove these abrasive particles from flows to cost-effectively protect your plant. We capture more, and finer, sand particles, than any other technology. In most applications, our solutions will remove more than 95% of grit 75-micron (200 mesh) and larger. Our small footprint solutions make it easy to eliminate abrasion issues in even the most constrained plant layouts.

In many types of food processing applications once the dirt and debris are removed by a high-performance system like a HeadCell® or Grit King® sand separation system the water can be recycled for immediate re-use upstream to wash or convey additional product,  or reused in other plant operations. When paired with a Grit Snail® dewatering escalator, the captured sand (grit) has very low water content allowing cost-effective disposal.

Only Hydro International Sand and Grit Removal Solutions Can:

  • Capture 95% of all sand, dirt, and grit solids 75 micron and larger
  • Provide a dry output that is ready for cost-effective disposal
