Belgian town achieves vital North European water quality targets

Storm King® helped the town of Namur, Belgium to prevent sewer overflows from its state-of-the-art Brumagne sewage treatment works and meet environmental regulations.

Situation

The town of Namur, Belgium, had instigated a €175m milestone project to provide state-of-the-art wastewater treatment for the city’s 125,000 inhabitants and to meet the requirements of the European Water Framework Directive.

Problem

Namur's complex sewage and stormwater network was discharging overflow wastewater through nearly 50 separate outfalls directly into the rivers.

Solution

33 Storm King® units have been installed by Belgian utility INASEP, spread between the 54 network pumping sites, to mitigate the risk of unwanted combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges into the river system.

Outcome

The network of Storm King® units controls onward flows, preventing overloading of the downstream network while providing pre-treatment of sediments, grits and floatables.

In particular they prevent highly polluting sediments, resuspended as a result of 'first flush' flow from storm incidents, from entering the environment.

The solution avoided building a large, central stormwater treatment plant, saving cost and space," said Marc Lemineur, Deputy Director General, INASEP, "The Hydro International devices also greatly reduce the flow requirements of the network, saving capital expenditure and reducing operating costs and pumping requirements.
